luxury vinyl plank flooringHave ever read the technical information on a Luxury Vinyl Plank and been confused on what it all means?  Well you’re not alone.

It isn’t uncommon to see multiple types of measurement used interchangeably on a single product.  The wear layer may be measured in mil, the overall thickness of the Luxury Vinyl Plank represented in mm (millimeters), and the width and length expressed in inches.  It makes it hard for a person to gain a perspective of the product they are looking at when they can’t easily compare the thickness of the wear layer, the top protective coating that covers the printed design, to the overall thickness of the product.

Common thicknesses of wear layers are 6 mil, 12 mil and 20 mil.  But what is a mil, and how does it compare to the overall thickness of the material expressed in mm?  Lets look at a Luxury Vinyl Plank by Max Windsor, specifically their Memoir MaxLock series.  On the box it shows a wear layer of 20 mil with the overall thickness of the plank at 4.2mm.  The conversion rate of mil to mm is 1 mil = .0254mm.  So a 20 mil vinyl has a .5mm wear layer.   Well if you are like me I don’t think in mm I think in inches.  So lets continue the conversion to something I can visualize a little easier.  1mm equals .0393701 inches.  So a 20 mil wear layer is .5mm which is .0197 inches or slightly less than 1/48th of an inch.  To give a little more visual perspective a piece of printer paper is 9 mil thick.

I hope this gives a little clarification on Luxury Vinyl Plank and if you have more questions please contact us at The Floor Barn.
