A certified flooring installer is a floor installer who has passed a certification program for a specific flooring product such as hardwood, tile, carpet or laminate floors. However the certification process can vary differently depending on what organization or company is giving the certification test.
Manufacturer certified flooring installer programs are implemented by some of your more larger flooring manufacturer’s, such as Shaw or Mohawk.
Organization certified flooring installer programs are not affiliated to any flooring manufacturer. They rather are industry promoters such as the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) who are providing educational opportunities to further promote the industry they represent.
When it comes to the benefit of being a certified flooring installer is that it validates your flooring expertise to potential clients and provides you a way to differentiate your competition. Is certification really beneficial or necessary, I would have to say 95% of the cases it is not. Where it is beneficial to be a certified flooring installer is if it is a new product that has changed the way a previous flooring product was installed. But for the most part, if you are installing a hardwood floor from Johnson and one from Shaw, you are utilizing the same method.
Is it necessary to be a certified flooring installer to be successful? The answer is a resounding no. Yes, the certifications can be nice on a resume and assist you in learning new products, however most products do not require a certification to install. Most of the tests are written as well as hands on, so sometimes a written test can be a little intimidating if only offered in English to a installer workforce that has a large contingency of English as a second language. As a consumer, it is more important that you purchase the product from a reputable retailer who employs skilled installers, not necessarily certified.
