Tips for choosing the right home contractor for your remodeling or flooring project:

If you are about to embark on a home improvement project, whether it be new hardwood flooring or a bathroom remodel, there are some very important things to consider in choosing the company that is right for your project.

Of course price is a major factor in a homeowner's decision in choosing the best proposal for their renovation. However, it should not be you sole factor or you are likely to be one of the those people with the home improvement horror stories.

Here is a recent article on Yahoo Homes that provides some tips and I will also add some additional points the comments they made here:

Regarding their tip #1, not all states require contractors to be licensed or even have a licensing program, like Texas. But it is important you make sure they insured in the event that something goes wrong on the project and burns your house to the ground.

Tip #2, very important that you get referrals, you can even ask some of the contractor's referrals if they are ok with you visiting their home to see the handiwork of the company.

Tip #3, no question is a dumb question, get all the answers you need to make an informed decision.

Tip #4, you must always have a contract, if you don't you are just asking for headaches. Generally the fly by night handyman with no insurance and an extremely low ball bid is the person without a contract. There should be several warning signs there.

Tip #5, Make sure it is a reasonable amount you expect in paying up front and also make sure it is spelled out in your contract.
