How to Choose Your Wood Flooring

Now that you have decided to have wood flooring installed in your home, what do you need to know to help you choose the right hardwoods for you and your home?

When preparing to buy your wood flooring, make sure and your due diligence and take time to educate yourself on the different types of floors. Too often we will get people that come into one of our stores of The Floor Barn and do not know the difference between engineered or solid hardwood, difference between the wood species, etc… Mostly they are concerned with the color and the price, which obviously is important, but definitely not the most important variable in choosing your new wood flooring.

A little bit of advice when choosing your wood flooring, go shop at your local flooring store. They should have employee’s in the retail showroom who are experienced in the flooring industry and can answer any questions you have as well as ask you questions to help you find the right floor for you. You might even find that wood flooring might not be the best flooring option for you and your home and might opt to go with something like vinyl plank or laminate.

Things to consider and discuss with your local flooring company are:

Where is the flooring going to be installed your home, upstair, main level or basement? Some wood floors are not recommended for installation in a basement.

What is the subfloor of your home, is it concrete or plywood? This can have an affect on what type of installation method is acceptable (glue, nail, staple or float) and can have factors to consider such as moisture content and more.

Do you want solid hardwood or engineered, which is best for you?

What type of wood species is best for my home and family situation. Are you retired with no kids and pets, then pretty any much wood species might be ok for you. Do you have pets and young children, then you want to go with a wood flooring that has high hardness rating such as a hickory.

These are just a few of the many questions you should ask yourself and your local wood flooring expert before you go out and invest in a lot of your hard earned money in your new hardwoods.
