You always hear these horror stories from friends, family or coworkers about a home remodeling project gone wrong because of their experience with a general contractor. Obviously there are many reasons why a project could leave a bad taste in the mouth of a homeowner as well as the general contractor himself. But the largest culprit is poor communication.

Poor communication can start from the beginning with no discussion of expectations  completion time table, contingency plans, payment schedule and much more.

As general contractor for The Floor Barn we emphasize communication from the very first visit with the client. We make them aware that we have an open line of communication and to not hesitate to contact us if the client has a question or concern. However, please make sure to be considerate that we do have lives outside of our work. With technology such as email and texting, many clients want to be in touch with their general contractor 24/7.

We also do our best to make sure that all aspects of the job are clearly defined in the contract to eliminate as much possibility for confusion as possible from the beginning.

Also, another important thing to consider is that a home improvement project is a construction site and their is an element to the unknown of the project. For example, if we are doing a bathroom remodel for a client and we demo the existing shower and find extensive water damage that was not visible, the client has to be reasonable in expecting a change order. Change orders can also be a source of problems if not discussed ahead of time.

Here is a good article with more information on tips to better your working relationship with your flooring or remodeling contractor.
