Are you in the process of taking on a shower remodel project? If so, you know that one of the most important decisions you will make in your remodeling project is the overall design of the shower.

Open showers used to be a design mostly relegated to the European, but over the last few years it has become a trend here in the United States. More specifically, we have completed several of these open shower remodel projects here in the Dallas / Fort Worth, TX area recently. However, there are many things to consider before deciding whether or not this design will be right for you and your home. Typically the choice on whether or not to have a shower door comes down to two factors, the space (size and layout) and the potential additional cost of a shower door.

If you have a small bathroom space, then an open shower can make your bathroom feel more expansive. Or maybe the shower needs handicap access for a wheelchair.

When it comes down to cost of a shower door, there are many factors that will come into play. For example, the style of glass (clear, thickness, frameless or semi-framless, streak proof, etc…) and the overall size of the door are the two biggest aspects to consider.

Other very important aspects to consider when contemplating going with out a shower door:

Make sure that you have proper drainage, you do not want to have standing water.
Keep in mind that your showers will be much more cooler because that glass is not there to help keep in the heat/steam of the shower.

Here is an excellent article that goes into more depth about other details of a doorless shower.
