How to Prep Your Floor Prior To Installing Wood

Here at The Floor Barn, a hardwood flooring store Burleson TX, we sale & install wood floors. The most popular type of wood floor that we sell and install is handscraped engineered hardwood floors. Most of the time our client has us install in their new floors they purchased from our store since it is often a big ticket purchase for them and they want it installed by a professional so they know it is down right and last a lifetime. However, sometimes there are some homeowners that are handy with tools and want to save some money and install it on their own. One of the most overlooked aspects of installing hardwood floors is prepping the subfloor prior to installation.
If you do not properly prep your subfloor prior to installing hardwood, then you could have dead spots, or spots that bounce where ever there might be a dip in the concrete. If you have a plywood subfloor, you should not need level the floor, it is typically only for a concrete floor.
Once you remove the existing floors of the project area, then you will take a long level and go over the entire surface area of the project area. When you run that level you will notice if there are any areas of concern when there is a significant gap between the subfloor and the level. Take a pencil and mark the areas that will need attention as you go throughout the floor.
Once you have designated areas that need to be addressed, then you will mix up some concrete patch, we use Planipatch by Mapei. Once you follow the instructions for mixing on the bag, then you will take the bucket of concrete patch and spread it in the marked areas using a trowel. Depending on how much patch was needed (thickness), the patch should dry within 1-2 hrs and then you can get started on installing your wood floors.
