The Subway Tile is a design has been utilized in residential and commercial buildings for over a 100 years. It truly has lasted the test of time. The Subway Tile design originated in the early 1900's on the walls of New York City's subway stations. Now in 2012 we here at The Floor Barn, a Burleson Bathroom Remodeling company, utilize that same style in bathroom and kitchen remodeling projects.
In bathroom remodel projects, we have utilized the Subway Tile design for showers and also as wainscoting on the bathroom walls and backsplash for the vanity. In kitchen remodel projects, it is most widely used as backsplash for the kitchen countertops.
The most common utilized design is the traditional glazed ceramic 3×6 tile installed in the Subway or Brick pattern. You can obviously get the tiles in many different colors and you now can get the tiles in many different materials such as glass, marble, stone and much more.
This is a style that has lasted a 100 yrs and I imagine will be around for at least another 100 yrs. If you are thinking about utilizing a subway tile application for your next home improvement project, here is a site with some good photos for inspiration for your design:
