Lumber Liquidators, the nation's largest retailer of hardwood and laminate floors had their headquarters and a local retail store searched by the Feds last week.

Several news agencies reported that the search warrant was executed in conjunction between the Department of Justice, Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It was reported that the search was conducted to investigate whether or not Lumber Liquidators violated the industry regulations that apply to the Lacey Act.

The Lacey Act is a law passed in 2008 that helps prevent illegal logging practices. The law helps protect our forests, it protects buyers of wood products who follow the logging industry rules and helps protect the consumers against low quality illegally harvested products. It achieves this by prohibiting the importation of illegally harvested lumber into the U.S. from other countries, with the primary concern being China.

With  whispers of concern circulating of Lumber Liquidators & possible Lacey Act violations,   we will wait to see what this investigation leads to, while Lumber Liquidators shareholders are currently seeing their stock price decrease in recent days. As a wood flooring industry professional, I hope that no laws have been broken so that not to give a black eye to our industry. However it is important that everyone abides by the rules in place to protect consumers and create a fair playing field for flooring retailers across America. It is reported that Lumber Liquidators is cooperating with the Federal Authorities in this investigation.
