When it comes to hardwood floor decor installations, there are many different options people can utilize to get the job done and create a unique look for their home.

One of the most important questions a homeowner will need to ask themselves after they have selected their new hardwood or laminate floors, is what type of installation method and direction you would like your new hardwood floor decor installed. There are many different options, so it is important to educate yourself so you can make informed decision.

The most common hardwood floor decor installation method is the Straight method. This is the most common because it is the easiest to complete and the most cost effective if you are having a professional install it. You also have the least waste cuts.

Another option is a diagonal pattern installation, going from one corner to another corner. It can create an optical illusion to make the room feel longer or bigger with this hardwood floor decor installation.

The next hardwood floor decor install method is the Chevron. It utilizes a pattern where the two plaints come to a point (mitered) and then replicated to create kind of a directional pattern.

Similar to the Chevron is the Herringbone, which has similar pattern as Chevron however the two planks are not mitered at the point, so it has a little few waste.

There are unlimited options you can come up with when it comes to decorative pattern for hardwood install, but these are the most common. Something to consider when choosing your hardwood floor decor install method is, what kind of material did I choose. If you chose a hardwood that has a lot of personality or movement in color and grain, it might be best to go with the straight installation method so as it not being to loud or overbearing with a busy wood and install.

The Floor Barn Kitchen Remodeling Contractor

As a kitchen remodeling contractor, we here at The Floor Barn see and utilize a lot of different kitchen design ideas in our projects. A trend right now in kitchen renovation projects is the utilization of open shelving.

Open shelving provides a clean, sleek and open air feel to the kitchen. It is also very flexible in adapting to multiple overall design concepts ranging from modern industrial to country chic. However, is this design right for everyone? As a kitchen remodeling contractor, some of the questions we get from clients looking at this design as option for their project is can I still get the necessary storage I need for my kitchen, how easy are they to maintain, what to put on them for a design aspect, etc…

Some tips for open shelving include not over-stacking the shelves. This is probably the most important, overstacking takes away that clean airy feeling and creates a more cluttered and disorganized feel.

Try to keep the varying materials to one or two materials, such as glass, porcelain, wood, and more.

Keep things that you used the most on the lower shelves. So keep your everyday bowls, plates and glasses in an easy to reach place, keep things like your wine glasses for entertaining that you don’t use everyday  in those harder to reach shelves.

Incorporate decorative storage containers to add different touch of design other than your dishware.

Most importantly, clean or dust regularly!

This is not the design for someone who does not like to clean or does not have a house cleaner.

As hardwood flooring professionals, we often have clients contact us to inquire on how to fix damaged hardwood floors. There is no standard solution since every repair project is unique. If you have a large surface area of wood that has surface damage, whether it is solid or engineered wood, it likely would be best to have the floor sanded and re-stained. That is provided that your engineered wood floors have not been sanded previously, since their wear layer is much smaller than a solid wood.
We at The Floor Barn do not repair or refinish solid hardwood floors, we do specialize in engineered wood. If there is little surface area of repair needed, for example a few planks, then this is a typical step by step solution:

Select the replacement strip that most closely matches the floor.
Use a wood chisel, remove the tongue of the replacement strip.
Next, remove the center section of the damaged strip using a wood chisel and carefully remove the tongues without damaging the surrounding strips.
Thoroughly clean the floor and subfloor.
Cut the replacement strip to the required length by cutting from the tongue end of the strip.
Remove the bottom part of the groove, both on the side and the end of the replacement strip.
Insert the replacement strip, check it for fit and then remove it.
The micro-V joint can be reshaped using sandpaper, a touch of stain and finish.
Finally, apply glue directly onto the subfloor and glue the replacement strip in place.
Note: It is important to save several replacement strips after the initial installation. Make sure to order an extra box when purchasing your floors for necessary future repairs.
