What is Cheap Flooring?

Cheap flooring has many different definitions, it is all in the eye of the beholder. For example, we here at The Floor Barn have a huge selection of cheap flooring, which to us means Low Cost flooring. Flooring that is of quality manufacturing by a brand name that you can trust, brand names that we have at discount prices compared to most other flooring retailers.

Then of course many people when they hear the word cheap flooring, they picture something that is not constructed well and will not last long, like cheap carpet for a low rent apartment. A word that is often thought of when people hear Cheap Flooring, is Seconds. Seconds are when the a flooring material could have a blemish yet is still functional. For example, say a laminate manufacturer is producing a specific laminate and on their production line a quality control worker sees that there is a small defect of some kind, like the photo image has small black spot where it is not supposed to be. They then take that plank and put it in a box, and they will do that with all their planks that do not meet 100% quality and then they turn around and box it and sell it at big discount to flooring retailers. This same process is common in all industries, like clothing.  So it is important that you ask your retail flooring system that you are not purchasing seconds if that is not what you are wanting. Some people  are ok with it because of the discount price they are getting.

So make sure you do your research before purchasing your new floors. It often is a big ticket investment and you do not want to make the wrong choice that you will likely have to live with for a long time.

If you live in the Dallas / Fort Worth area and are looking for some cheap flooring (discount prices on top quality brand name floors), stop by one of our showrooms or shop online at our website and we will be happy to help you find the right floor for your and your home.

12MM laminate flooring has become the most popular flooring sold here at our retail locations of The Floor Barn. There are many reasons for that being the case, however the two biggest catalysts of growth are that the cost of 12MM laminate flooring has decreased significantly in recent years and the improvement in quality of laminate products.

In regards to the cost, our most popular 12mm laminate flooring is $1.85 – $1.95 a square foot. So you have a thick solid floor at an affordable price. To give you a more relatable visual, 12mm thick floor is just a hair under 1/2″ thick. We hardly sell any 8mm laminate flooring anymore at our stores since the price gap between the 8mm and 12mm floors has closed, you get more for your money with the 12mm. The 12mm is so much better at absorbing sound of foot traffic than the thinner laminate, so if used with a quality underlayment you get a nice quiet and solid floor, not that loud hollow sound floor that most people were used to when walking on laminate floors.

The second biggest reason for the popularity is that the technology in creating the digital look of laminate has significantly improved in creating a more real hardwood look. We have 12mm laminate flooring and engineered hardwood flooring down in our retail stores and a lot of customers can not tell the difference.

The Floor Barn has discount prices on brand name 12mm laminate flooring. If you live in the Dallas / Fort Worth metroplex, you can stop in one of our outlets in Burleson or Arlington. If you live outside the DFW area, you can shop online at our website, http://www.floorbarn.com.

luxury vinyl plank flooringHave ever read the technical information on a Luxury Vinyl Plank and been confused on what it all means?  Well you’re not alone.

It isn’t uncommon to see multiple types of measurement used interchangeably on a single product.  The wear layer may be measured in mil, the overall thickness of the Luxury Vinyl Plank represented in mm (millimeters), and the width and length expressed in inches.  It makes it hard for a person to gain a perspective of the product they are looking at when they can’t easily compare the thickness of the wear layer, the top protective coating that covers the printed design, to the overall thickness of the product.

Common thicknesses of wear layers are 6 mil, 12 mil and 20 mil.  But what is a mil, and how does it compare to the overall thickness of the material expressed in mm?  Lets look at a Luxury Vinyl Plank by Max Windsor, specifically their Memoir MaxLock series.  On the box it shows a wear layer of 20 mil with the overall thickness of the plank at 4.2mm.  The conversion rate of mil to mm is 1 mil = .0254mm.  So a 20 mil vinyl has a .5mm wear layer.   Well if you are like me I don’t think in mm I think in inches.  So lets continue the conversion to something I can visualize a little easier.  1mm equals .0393701 inches.  So a 20 mil wear layer is .5mm which is .0197 inches or slightly less than 1/48th of an inch.  To give a little more visual perspective a piece of printer paper is 9 mil thick.

I hope this gives a little clarification on Luxury Vinyl Plank and if you have more questions please contact us at The Floor Barn.

Tile Flooring is one of the most common floor material in our homes in America today. It is popular mostly because it's durability and is used primarily in the wet areas or our homes such as kitchen, bathroom, entry, dining and laundry rooms.

When shopping for tile flooring, the selection of grout is often overlooked or not even thought of by the customer. It is funny, a lot of times clients come into our showrooms in Arlington and Burleson, TX and they can find a tile flooring they like within minutes, and then they will become overwhelmed with the grout color selection and take them hours to finally pick one.

There are several things to consider when picking a grout for your tile flooring. For example the type of grout, the grout color, how thick or thin you want your grout lines, and grout maintenance.

The type of grout will vary depending on a few different factors such as where the tile is being installed and how much the tile flooring purchaser intends to properly maintain and care for their grout. If you use a standard grout, then you will want to reseal the grout lines every 9-12 months. If you want to limit the maintenance or are installing tile flooring in an extreme wet area such as a shower, then you might consider utilizing an Epoxy grout.

The grout color will vary depending on the tastes of the homeowner. Most people want the grout lines to blend with the tile flooring and will choose a grout color that achieves that the best. Every so often, you will get a homeowner that prefers a dark grout even if the tile is a light colored.

The thickness of your grout lines can vary depending on the type of tile flooring being installed and also the tastes of the client. Most clients want as thin as possible grout lines and the most common used grout line thickness is 1/8". If you are installing a natural stone tile like travertine or slate and they are not very uniformed in their size, then you might consider going with a grout linke of 3/16".

Grout Maintenance is often overlooked by the homeowner. Unless if you have utilized a product like an epoxy grout, you will need to make sure you reseal your grout lines every year to help them maintain the color and structure. However, most homeowners never reseal the grout lines for the entire time that they live at their home. A large part of our bathroom remodeling projects here at The Floor Barn are because of water damage due to the grout lines eroding due to improper care. Resealing is easy to do, you just have to make sure that you do it..

So next time you are shopping for tile flooring, do not overlook the important aspect of grout selection, it can come back to haunt you if you do not put some thought into it.
